Editorial: Gang Violence Impacts Everyone

On December 13, 2008, Lincoln High senior student, Monique Palmer was shot and killed walking home from a party in Valencia Park. Their deaths affected many people in the community. Friends and families of both victims had to face the reality that their loved ones were gone. Nobody deserves to lose their loved ones in this manner, they were victims to gang violence.

eaded to stardom, War Stories caught student’s attention with their music last Tuesday, February 16, in the center quad during lunch. As featured on MTV and VH1, the band contains four musically talented members: Reid Curby, Eric Mace, Andrew Rivera, and Evan Robinson.

Students gathered in the quad and listened as War Stories performed four of their songs. They opened with 'TV', then 'Lion', and going in to 'Rage', and saved their newest song, 'Insecure Boyfriend' for last.

Nearly every student that watched the show enjoyed the band. Senior, Kapri Pollard, Center for the Arts, commented on her first time seeing the band by saying, "War Stories is a very cool band." Senior, Shimaya Williams, Center for the Arts agreed with Kapri, "I think the band is great. I like the beats they have."

When asked how it felt to be performing at Lincoln, band member Evan Robinson responded, "Its a rewarding opportunity to meet new people and introduce original art." For band member Eric Mace, performing on stage is a "total rush" and knowing that the students enjoyed their music is "inspiring."

Though many students said they enjoyed War Stories performance, many of the students couldn’t decide which song they liked the best. Students were curious to know the band members favorite song of their own music. When asked their favorite song, band member Reid Curby made a very valid point by saying, "Choosing your favorite song of your own music is like a parent choosing their favorite baby."

While interviewing the band members, I was educated to many things. I learned that Andrew Rivera and Eric Mace both took band in high school and received music scholarships to Los Angeles Music Academy and Eastern Central College.

With almost two years of the group being together and with two albums out, it seems like they have been together for a while. ‘Volume I’ and ‘Arm Yourself’ are the titles of War Stories two albums.

People who enjoyed the musical entertainment of War Stories are encouraged to befriend and talk to War Stories on communication sites such as Twitter, Myspace and Facebook. To do so, go to www.NuConrad.com for links to all the websites that help you get in touch with the members.

A big thanks goes out to War Stories for coming to our school and entertaining our campus with their music. If you would like to hear more music from War Stories, you may find them on Itunes. I am looking forward to hear more about the stories of their war.
